5/24/2009 Is this Common Raven looking for grubs or for brown creeper nestlings? I rushed outside to the sound of the old pine stump in my yard being torn apart. This raven was systematically tearing lark chunks of bark from the tree, then carefully examining the bared trunk. I was reminded of the time my kids were tearing chunks of bark off a stump and inadvertently pulled apart a brown creeper nest full of juveniles.
In looking for other cases of bark-tearing behavior I came across this blog reporting a raven dropping pieces of bark on a bald eagle. http://crowcentric.blogspot.com/2009/01/cranky-corvid-common-raven-vs-bald.html
