Spotted Towhees Spoil it for a Snake

5/18/2009 As I walked out my front door at midday today I could hear at least two spotted towhees angrily scolding…something. Moving quietly to within 20 feet of a low blanket of young cedars underneath a big redbud I watched two adults diving in and out of the cover.

After 5 minutes I watching I moved in for a look. There at the center of their activity was a small (12”) gopher snake, coiled up in the shade. Why were they so concerned? Moments later a very juvenile spotted towhee, seeking help of any kind, stumbled over to within about a 18 inches of my left foot. Now I understood!

I backed off and watched the adults lead the chick away from all of us (me and the snake) predators. I was able to catch a parting shot of the baby as he hopped to mom and dad.
